Humble Resistance — 1 Peter 5

Whether we know it or not, each one of us in the midst of a war. A war that’s been raging for thousands and thousands of years. This isn’t just a war between good and evil. It’s not a war between two ethereal concepts or philosophies. It’s a war between God and Satan–two beings. God the Creator and Sustainer of all that exists versus Satan, the prideful, fallen angel who still thinks he can win this war. One of my favorite pastors says the story of the Bible is “Kill the dragon, get the girl.” Satan is the dragon who has taken us hostage and we are the girl–the princess, the bride of Christ.

You are in the midst of this war. While the broader war is raging, there are smaller battles being fought. Some of you find yourself in the midst of a battle in school. You’re fighting with friends or struggling with schoolwork. Some of you find yourselves in the midst of a battle with family. You’re fighting with your parents or siblings. Some of you even feel like you’re in a battle with God, himself. You are wrestling with your faith. You are wrestling with questions. You’re struggling to follow. In the midst of these struggles, some of you also find yourselves being persecuted for your faith. All of these are smaller battles of a bigger war. (more…)

The question we’re looking at tonight is: What is the good life? There comes a point in everyone’s life when they begin to ask this question. Often times, it comes as the result of some tragedy. You stop, take a moment to look around. You notice that you are surrounded by people who are plodding through life, most of them unhappy. All of these things force the question upon us: What is the good life? (more…)

I want to start off today by helping you to understand one of the reason’s I’m passionate about youth ministry. Some of you have probably heard this before, but pay attention anyways. A little reminder is always helpful.

I didn’t grow up in a Christian home. I was in the fourth grade before my parents became Christians and I was in fifth grade before I became a Christian. Yet, I really had no idea what the Christian life looked like. My parents were still trying to figure it out and, to be honest, I wasn’t really trying to figure it out. Life didn’t get easier or better after I became a Christian. Actually, I began to make some really poor decisions after fifth grade. (more…)

Persecution, Suffering, and Praise — 1 Peter 1

We are beginning a new series tonight that will last until the Winter Retreat. We will be working our way through the book of 1 Peter, taking one chapter each week. This will also be reflected in your devotional each week. You’ll be spending a lot of time in 1 Peter. That’s a good thing. We want you to soak in this message. We want you to be meditating on this message for the next five weeks. The more I study the book of 1 Peter, the more I am convinced that it is the message we need to hear right now–the message that many of you need to hear right now. So, I’m encouraging you to show up each Wednesday night engaged and ready to hear God’s Word. I’m also encouraging you to wrestle with the messages each week. I’m encouraging you to read your devotional booklet each morning. I have set up your devotional so that I will preach on a chapter of 1 Peter on a Wednesday night. Then, you’ll spend the next week reading and meditating on that chapter. There’s some repetition in the devotional–you’ll find yourself reading some verses a few times. That’s how it was designed. That’s what meditating on scripture looks like. (more…)
