Do Something — Day 1

// June 17th, 2012 // Events

What a great first day of the trip! As leaders we are really excited to see how God is going to use this group for His glory. We started off this morning with the commissioning service. It was cool to see how God orchestrated Cal’s sermon to fit in perfectly with how we wanted to kick the week off. Once everyone came back to church at five o’clock, we got all of our stuff organized then headed outside for some “fun”. We introduced our entire crew to this years obstacle course. They had a lot of fun doing the various activities. They probably had as much fun doing it as Troy had making it. The obstacle course involved Frisbee golf,  belly crawling, balancing, rolling up hill, Bible verse battles, etc… After tiring them out, we gave them a break to eat supper and get to know each other a little more. The table was kinda quiet but, like always, it will be really loud tomorrow night. After supper we gathered them in our meeting area and began to give them a glimpse of our goals for the week. Jason took the opportunity to challenge them to live radically this week and to spend themselves for God’s glory. He also talked to them about hearing God speak to them from His word. The session closed by reading an article by John Piper called “The Morning I Heard the Voice of God”. If you want to read it for yourself, here is the link. Following the session we broke everyone up into their small groups and headed off on our prayer “walk”. The prayer walk went well this year and our students were even able to experience a little persecution during it. Some kids saw us praying and took the opportunity to mock us. It was cool to see our group continue unflinchingly. It didn’t slow them down a bit. We ended the evening with our “campfire” message. Because of the rain, we did a makeshift campfire with a candle and listened to Amanda Van’t Hof talk to us about God’s love and forgiveness. It was cool to see people begin to grasp His love for us. Of course we put them all to bed by playing Taps. All in all a great first day and God was very glorified. I can’t wait to see what He’ll do tomorrow.
